Community-based child surveillance in Chicmo: 2000-2012
Description
This book systematizes the experience of community surveillance of comprehensive care for children under three years of age, developed in the district of Santa María de Chicmo, Andahuaylas, between 2000 and 2012, as a strategy to combat child malnutrition and anemia. Authors Néstor Taipe and Mery Laurente document how the intervention of UNICEF's Buen Inicio Program and the NGO Kusi Warma managed to reduce chronic malnutrition from 55.2% to 23% and anemia from 75.1% to 39%, through intersectoral articulation between the health sector, the local government, and community organizations. The study describes the process of capacity building for communal authorities and community health workers, analyzing the elements of sustainability of this community strategy that prioritized early childhood and mobilized local resources for human capital development.
