Schools for Curacas: Between Two Worlds
Schools for Curacas: Between Two Worlds
Description
This book analyzes the education of the sons of curacas during the colonial period as an instrument of Spanish domination in Peru. The author examines how the Jesuits organized and directed these schools from the second half of the 16th century until 1767, with the purpose of instilling in the Andean nobility an idealized Hispanicized way of life at the service of the dominant sector. The study reveals that these educational centers trained effective intermediaries between the "Republic of Spaniards" and the "Republic of Indians," consolidating colonial power until the crisis unleashed by the Tupac Amaru rebellion in 1780. This new edition, presented half a century after its original publication, constitutes a fundamental contribution to understanding the colonial foundations of republican Peruvian education and analyzing our current educational problems on the eve of the Bicentennial.
